'플라스틱'을 재료로 하거나 '일회용품'으로 용도가 분류되는 사물의 등장이 대표적이죠. 우리 사회는 한동안, 지금까지도 버리는 것과 버려지는 것에 무던해진 것이 사실입니다. 그 사이에서 공예는 인간과 사물의 관계성을 이야기하는 행위이자 하나의 장르로, 최근에는 문명의 발달로 인한 인간성 상실이 화두인 가운데, 사회는 공예가 전하는 그 메시지에 점차 귀를 기울이고 있습니다. 그리고 어쩌면 그 메시지를 더욱 잘 전할 수 있는 것은 쉽게 쓰고 버려지게 된 소재들이라 생각됩니다. 공예에 있어서 과거의 리사이클링이 생활의 효용을 위함이었다면 현대의 리사이클링은 사회 문제에 대한 조금 더 거시적인 메시지를 담고 있죠. 재료에 집중하며 공예를 바라보는 것은 현대 공예의 또 다른 매력을 발견할 수 있는 방법이 될 것 같습니다.
